I used to visit Salzburg frequently for 2/3 weeks a year on business and stayed at the 5* Sacher Oosterreichischerhof in the centre on the river - excellent & very central, also stayed at the Kobenzl 5*, 5 mins up the mountain overlooking Salzburg - fab views, wonderful hotel (various USA presidents have stayed there et al).
On holiday there (not on expenses) stayed at a very typical Austrian hotel, the Bayerischer Hof away from the centre at the foot of a mountain.
It is a beautiful town - loads to see - wonderful museums. My favourite thing is the cemetery. It is built into the mountainside, next to the church & has wonderful mausoleums & very decorative headstones. Superb day trips out of the town also. Enjoy!!

Sorry my memory is faulty, I've just realised that the Bayerischer Hof is a 4* a once stayed at in the town - the traditional hotel I holidayed at was this one - the Doktorwirt

My children and I stay at the Schloss Mnchstein , which is at the top of Mnchsberg, overlooking old Salzburg. It's actually a castle and only has approximately 20+rooms. I prefer it because it's away from the hustle and bustle of the town. There's actually a lift built into the mountain that will take you directly to town. In any event, youre no more than five minutes away by walking. It's quite my favourite. The style is traditional Austrian. My preferred suites are those upstairs. However, there are two suites with private access from either side of the hotel. I just find them to be slightly dark. Id recommend staying on the 1st floor.

In the Summer I've stayed several times at the Hotel Schloss Fuschl. It's also a castle, situated alongside a magnificent lake. We've stayed in the cottages and
the 'tower.' If you have children, I 'think' you might prefer a cottage. If you're a couple travelling, I'm sure you would like the tower. The Schloss Fuschl is much
larger than the Schloss Mnchstein (over a hundred rooms as I recall) and as such, loses some of its intimacy. However, it still has an impressive fairytail impact, especially if youve never visited Salzburg before.

When Im on my own, or when Im hosting guests, I stay at the Goldner Hirsch. I do love this hotel. Its smack in the centre of town, facing Str Gedreidegasse, which is the main shopping area. If youre on your own, or if youre interests are more in shopping and sightseeing, then this may be just the place for you. The hotel has less than a hundred rooms, but I cant recall how many. I think the only occasional demotivator has been when theres an excess of American guests in the hotel. I remember the concierge once telling me that almost all of them use frequent traveller awards and it can become a bit demanding on the hotel.

I'm a bit of a fanatical foodie as well as a hopeless romantic. So my preferences most often are tied to dining and ambiance. If my hands were twisted, Id probably vote for the Schloss Mnchstein because of its intimacy.
Salzburg is one of my favourite cities in the world, so Im constantly finding reasons to strand myself there!
I hope you have a wonderful trip!
