I have some mushrooms/toadstools on my lawn. They are white, with white underneath the cap. They measure about 4cm across. Can someone tell me whether they are edible or poisonous?
Not easy to identify from that description and you have to be very carefull with mushrooms as they can be quite hard to identify. If in any doubt then dont eat them.
I agree with Hawkwalk - without a photo, it's very difficult to say. The only one you can be absolutely sure is safe is the hedgehog fungus - it's quite knobbly on top, white or creamy coloured, but underneath, instead of gills, there are little spines. They are absolutely lovely to eat, especially fried in butter, and you can dry them, too, for future use.
Has the price of mushrooms gone up lately or something?? Just go to your local grocery store and buy the white, edible button mushrooms that everybody else eats, you don't have to be so organic (or a cheapskate) and eat absolutely everything that grows on your lawn.... just go grab your straw basket and off you go to the supermarket. Good luck
