Virtual memory?
4 Answers
What is virtual memory and how do I increase it?
I'm trying to install the drivers for my scanner onto my laptop and it comes up with an error message: This application requires 36mb of virtual memory in order to run'. Then it shuts down.
I have loads of free memory on my laptop, how can I get it to run?

Assuming you're on Win XP, to increase virtual memory goto control panel choose System then the Advanced tab. In the performance box click on setings then Advanced tab, Virtual memory box is at the bottom, click on change to see how much you've got set.
3Mb doesn't sound like very much memory, it could be that you have some progams running in the background that are causing the install to hang. You can check what is running by opening Windows task manager (CTRL + ALT + DEL)

You don't increase virtual memory
physical - yes ... but virtual no ... windows should be managing it's own virtual settings
control panel | system | advanced | performance | advanced | change
check to see what the settings are (it should have system managed ticked)
couple of questions ... how much disc space do you have free (should be about 20%)
how much ram is fitted
Scanning can use huge amounts of disc space ... possibly the app is telling you that there isn't enough space for it's temp files .....
alternatively .... errors on virtual memory can be reported if
a the install prog can't find enough disc space to work in
b you try to install a 98 prog onto xp
c the install file is corrupt
