Biggest Wine Drinkers

I believe that the French are considered to be Europe's top wine consumers, but how is this calculated? Millions of Brits converging on French hypermarkets, and leaving them looking like scenes of locust attacks, must surely contribute to the French sales.....but that ain't consumption. Where do the figures come from?

I don't know how they work these things out but I have heard that belgians are in fact the largest consumers of wine (volume per head of population)
