When my mother left school, there were few options open to her - nurse, secretary, teacher or mother. It was still a rarity for women to have a university education. I am lucky in the sense that I have a great career, where women are treated as equals to men. Indeed, I actually find feminine charms help some days.
As to whether a woman could be a hod carrier - no reason why not - in fact the building site opposite me employs at least two women brickies. Although why she would want to when she could claim "naff off that's a blokes job" is beyond me.

Society now expects women to work and those that chose not to are apparently unfulfilled or plain lazy What was wrong with women staying at home and having their husbands slippers warming by the fire IF that is what THEY wanted to do?
Men and women are completely different and should not be compared. Men appeared to have much more respect for women and were brought up to open doors, pull out chairs & walk on the outside pavement Women wont even take a compliment these days without having to give one back.
Women also leave very little to the imagination these days; they act like men, some actually dress like men and we also have to have every intimate detail thrust down our throats by TV ads for Thrush creams, Femfresh and pantyliners etc.

Sorry first part of my post above was missing - should have read....
In my opinion, it was a much better place before women started seeking equality to the degree they have. I am all for equality, but they now seem to have to try and prove they are in fact better and what has that done now they have to work 37+ hour weeks, run a house, look after the kids, get the next round of drinks in great quality of life!
