Hi bandit, yes i think they would run off, i have a Basset Hound and i was told by the breeder never let him off his leash, especially where there is wild life.
Bassets have a unique sense of smell, and they are very stubborn, but we love him to bits, love megan. xx
My first choice of dog would have been a beagle, but my cousin who was a vet said - get anything but a beagle. They are the only breed that when you call them run in the opposite direction! Still think they are gorgeous, though.
Yes they are a scent hound and if let off put their noses to the ground and just go. They also howl and bark a lot, and need a lot of exercise. Great characters though if you can put up with the downside.
Thanks to everyone for your answers - I think we should leave Beagles alone, we do like an obedient hound. Incidentally, I too had a Bassett Hound when I was younger, what a character! He hated being on a lead, he would never stray far if off lead, he would constantly look around to see where you were, he could keep up with me on a horse too! Put a lead on him and he steadfastly refused to move an inch!
yes they do run off so i never let mine off when we are out i am lucky enough to have a very large garden so she can run loose at home i would not have anything else now she is so loving and does not have an nasty bone in her body. like all breeds she has her bad points mainly her love of food and if allowed she would eat until she burst. but thats beagles for you
