Make-up Techniques

This may seem a vain or stupid question but I have never really known how to put make-up on properly. I'm not sure whether the technique is passed on genetically and I'm doing it right or I look so stupid people don't have the heart to say. It is something we are never shown how to do and are expected to get right and keep up with changing fashions. So I was wondering if anyone knew a book or website that gives step by step instructions?

Probably needing a confidence check? Why don't you try the bodyshop or one of the beauty counters for some advice. Pick a nice quiet mid-week time when the consultants can spend time with you. They will of course try n sell their own products, but ask them to talk you through the techniques, and tell them you don't want to buy anything until you have spent some time with your "new look". I love the bodyshop foundation brush - you can't go wrong with it! Forget sponges, however expensive. This brush changed my life! Nice smooth coverage, very quickly. Don't know if this is teaching ma granny to suck eggs, but good luck anyway!

Please don't go to any of the beauty counters at the big department stores.Have you seen how bad those beauticians look? Their make-up is so plastered on with a trowel, they look like grotesquely painted dolls.If that's what they do to themselves, what kind of advice would they give to you? Perhaps you could try a good magazine instead. Personally, unless you have something to hide, keep your make-up simple and let your own natural beauty show through. Most men, in my experience, prefer the subtle look.

For a non threatening starter,You could try watching some of the QVC in the salon shows, you don't have to buy the products and they seem to give good general advice, also you can phone or email in and ask questions

Don't be too put off by the beauty counters. My make-up is very natural with no orange tide marks!

Jess, I would suggest you have a look at the Chanel website. They have short movie clips which show you how to apply make up and talk you through it (if you have sound)
