What his sentence will depend on what he is charged with and that will depend on the nature of the images in his possession. Many so called "child porn" sites only contain images of over 18s. If he is in possession of images of children then consideration will be given to the type of image = what it depicts and the age or approximate age of the children involved.
If he genuinely has images of pre-teen girls even at level 1 on the scale he is likely to get custody. Child pornography images are graded on a scale with none sexual images of naked children at one end and images of sexual penetration between adults and children at the other.
Sentence is largely determined by how many images and of what level of seriousness they are
Jillus' friend is talking through his or her backside

Don't forget mitigation... if he's got a well informed barrister/solicitor representing him in court then they will plead for as much leniency as they can in order to get a lighter penalty - and they have no choice but to take it into account due to sentencing laws and guidelines.... so it's as much, if not more, down to how hard the solicitor/barrister pleads the case to keep them out of prison!
