baby with ongoing eye infection

Please please help. My little boy was born with an eye infection, he has had numerous treatments but its not clearing. He is 6 months old now.

The thing thats worrying me is, I did a search about it on internet and Chlymadia keeps coming up, that an eye infection in new borns that doesnt clear up with eye drops could prob be born by a mum who has this, it can also cause chest probs (which he has) I have only ever been with my hubby, and he was tested positive for this when we first met (when he was a student and got it cleared up)

And I'm having a few women probs at the minute too, so put it all together and whats it look like?

I'm panicking now, as this would mean he has cheated on me.

He swears blind he hasnt and is devastated that I have even accused him (dont know if he will ever forgive me)

teasy, speak to your GP about getting tests done for infection before jumping to conclusions. If your baby has Chlamydia then dicuss this with your husband.

In the meantime bathe your childs eyes often with a solution of cooled boiled water with a touch of salt if necessary.

Until you get the problem diagnosed then there is no reason to cause conflict between you and your husband. The priority is to get your son checked over by a peadiatricion if your GP is unable to come to a diagnosis.

I agree with redcrx.

I also have to say that my son was also born with an eye infection. He was treated with antibiotics for a long time...no joy.

The paediatrician told me that it was a common complaint (never mentioned chlamydia) and that it would probably clear naturally by the time he was a year old. He was right! in the meantime I bathed his eye twice daily with mild saline.

Thank you so much, I know its probably just a coincidence, as he is a good man and dont think he would do that to me, but you never know anyone 100% do you?

As for the eye infection, I bathe it every few hours, and this is his fourth set of treatments for it, I had to push for the swab as I was constantly told it was a blocked tear duct. After being told the infection came back positive for conjuctivitis, the doctor rang me 2 weeks later to say that the eye had 2 bacterial infections found in it which came from the birth canal. He did say it was quite common, but the ointments have not worked. Thats why I did the search, and it just frightened me. Especially when it said that it causes chest damage from the age of 6 weeks, round about the time my little boy developed bronchiolitis.

google diagnosis is never a good idea as youve discovered. Its easy to spot all sorts of links that may really have no relevance to the actual illness he has.

Please push for more tests, it may be that he has a blocked tear duct as well as the infection as blocked ducts are fairly common in babies although they do generally sort themselves out as pippa says.

dont risk the trust you and your husband have on the basis of what a PC search engine threw up.

Leukaemia
Various other cancers
Asthma
Gout
M.E

No doubt I have had other illnesses/diseases too, but stopped googling a long time ago ;o)

Good luck, Teasy ~ I am sure all is fine and your sons eye infection will clear eventually. In the meantime do push for more treatment if you feel it is necessary ~ but stop googling! xx

My son had this when he was little as well, I think they thought it was a blocked or infected tear duct - he didn't get any antibiotics, he just eventually grew out of it. It was terrible though, the wee souls eye used to stick shut when he was sleeping and I had to bath all the crap off it so he could get his eye open. I wouldn't worry too much, I am sure that they would tell you if it was anything other than a normal (if persistent) ye infection.
