But yes, she was a liberal reformer, campaigning for prison reforms.
More on Lizzie Fry (1780-1845) She formed an association for the improvement of (women's) prison conditions in 1817, and worked with her brother Joseph Gurney on a report on prison conditions and reform (1819), which had a great influence. Elizabeth's maiden name was Gurney, but she married into the Fry (chocolate manufacturers) family. Incidentally, the other great chocolate manufacturing family, the Cadburys, were also Quakers and also from the North. Both families were opposed to slavery, and they married into each other. Eventually their companies merged, Cadbury's becoming the dominant business. I don't know about their descendants, but at least one of them was in a major 70s rock band.
Cadbury's chocolate was always better anyway in my opinion, being sweether and creamier than Fry's, though I still like Fry's Turkish Delight (made to the original Fry's recipe even though owned by Cadbury's. Cadbury's beat all though, including Mars, Nestle, Rowntree's and that tasteless European continental stuff. Have you tried the new Dairy Milk with pieces if biscuit through it? Absolutely de-scrumptious! By the way, I don't work for Cadbury's.
Well, as the 'topic' has moved on to choccie, I thought I'd take 'time-out' to give the thread a 'boost'. I'd go as far as 'mars' or the 'milky way' for some choccie. I'd search the 'galaxy' if I had to! When I get home of an evening I just 'flake' out with a bar! If I go on a 'picnic' I always like to take some with me to eat while I sit by the lake, dropping in pebbles to make it 'ripple', and then I'll nod off and 'dream' - of chocolate! :-D
