No it is not best to close your bank account. Just keep an eye on your statements for any odd transactions. The info hasn't fallen into the hands of criminals so there is no need to panic (yet).

no-one knows where the info has gone but its entirely up to you whether you change you account or just keep a very close eye on it.

Personally Im keeping mine where it is for now and watching it like a hawk. The banks have said they will keep an eye on accounts but there are rather a lot to watch arent there lol

Just think of the agro if everyone starts up new accounts, there would be problems all over i reckon.

My fiance works in a bank and he was dreading going into work this morning as he knew people would panic over this uneccessarily. Just being vigilant is all that is required,and as 4get says if your passwords are children's names etc get them changed ASAP.

I'm just going to keep a close eye on it. Not too concerned about the money to be honest, more concerned about my childrens details becoming available to a nasty piece of work. I think if you are realistic and just have a think about who else actually knows thier details i.e tesco's clubcard, mothercare and boots with the bounty packs, they all have our babies names address and d.o.b on.
Just be vigilant.

Although they say that it hasn't fallen into criminal hands, if they don't know where it is, how can they say that. The other thing is that those disks are now worth millions to the criminal element, so i would imagine that they are looking very hard for them and would be willing to pay hansomely to whoever has got them, thus increasing the risk. However, there is a danger that everyone rushing to change their accounts will bring the banking system to a halt benefitting no-body. I would change you passwords for any key accounts that you have and be very vigilant. I might be tempted to close any accounts that your children have if they are with the same bank as yours as they will now have your childs date of birth and will find it easier to locate those accounts. Or at the very least, remember to keep an eye on their finances as well.

If you are with a major bank, I would be very worried indeed, as these will be targetted by the fraudsters.
Closed all our accounts yesterday and deposited it with Northern Rock, a much safer option as it is guaranteed by the Bank of England.
Try not to be too alarmed.

We never keep more than we need in our bank accounts and whenever the bank/credits cards write to us to increase our overdraft/credit for being a good customer we ask them to set it back to �200. Excess money (ha ha!) goes into a building scoiety account that requires a pass book.

I wouldn't think it necessary to close your account, just keep an eye on transactions (as others have said). But you should also keep an eye out for any loans, mobile phones etc that you may suddenly seem to acquire. It is more likey that if the data has fallen into the wrong hands it will be used to fraudulently obtain credit rather than hack your bank account.
