After the interview locally, all documents and statements are checked and then passed on for further verification.
A point remembering , is that a national insurance number is not classed as I.D as a lot of people think. Any claims to benefit etc have to be backed up with further evidence. It also isn't proof of residency in the U.K as also incorrectly assumed.
Hope this helps?

Thankyou for your helpful answer. It is a lot more complicated as the marriage certificate (Kenyan) was used prior to it being proved to be a forgery- actually it was a genuine document, probably obtained through bribery in Kenya, that had fake information on it. For example the witnesses were not present at the so-called wedding and the groom was in a different country!!! ILR was obtained on the strength of this cert. and a multitude of lies on the application form. It was only after this that the cert. plus other docs. were used to gain the NI number- this was to enable her partner to obtain pension credit! ( partner recently deceased). Both had a thriving business overseas, owned two properties in this country etc. All this has been reported to the HO (re. the ILR application) some time ago yet nothing has been done about it. I wondered whether there was any point following up the NI matter in order to get things moving.
Quite tricky then, but again still unusual for a N.I number to be issued unless there was still further back up information, i.e passport, home office documents etc etc, dates of births would be clarified but anything is possible I suppose.
If you have had no response to reports of this to the relevant departments, then the next step would be the police as major fraud has been committed.
