I Think it's actually "ten feet off of Beale"-Beale being Beale Street.

Yes, chaff is right it does refer to Beale Street. Marc Cohn wrote the song after listening to an Al Green sermon in Memphis. It is supposed to be a journey to be baptized into the world of Blues Music.

Cohn said it was about a 'Spriritual Journey'.
