Wouldn't it be nice to set up an annual award for Council services. Nobody seems to have a good word these days for the selfless energy that those fine folk dedicate to our wellbeing. Why don't we be positive and reward their efforts. Lets have new and exciting ways ways of showing our appreciation for everything that they do for us. Toodle pip.

Private Eye do an annual Rotton Boroughs award - but that's probably the opposite of what you're talking about...!

You local council would love you.  Personally in the 18 months that I have worked for the city council I increasingly feel like a rebate on my community charge.

I'm sorry, you are looking for something positive.  I think you would find that a simple letter of thanks for something would chuff em to bloody bits because some of them are selfless, dedicated and hardworking whilst the rest of them need to have the cobwebs blown off and to be told that the world doesn't owe them a living - oh, I feel better for that.

You're not being sarcastic are you?

If not where do you live?!  I've lost count (thats not a figure of speech BTW, I really have lost count) the number of times I've had to phone our council to ask why things haven't been done when they say they will.  I have lived in several places throughout the country and it's been the same each time.  Actually, thinking about it, the higher the council tax the more frustration...

I should say I also worked for a council for 10 years & it's the same as any organisation - problems and successes are down to individual people.  So, like buchanan says if you've had good service write to that person and the head of their department.

You're right buchanan, I do feel much better now!

I think council workers should receive awards, but not the councils themselves. I worked for my local council (I've moved now so it's not local) for 6 long months, and I can tell you that we were the most friendly, helpful people you could hope to meet...we just couldn't help people because we know as well as the layman does that nothing ever gets done because of the way councils are set up and run. It was six months of my life that I'll never be able to get back.

It sounds like a good idea, but it all depends in which area you live & how good the services are! We pay an extortionate amount of council tax, but don't get enough back in return! That is my personal opinion!

our council are a bunch of idle so and so i have a pothole outside my house, i reported it several times eventually 4 men a lorry and a shovel turned up they all stood round while one man threw a shovel of tarmac in the hole, and away they went a week later it was as bad as ever, everytime it rains it floods as it is getting worse, as the road is very busy,so it can stay like that now,,and dont mention the bin men they wont take anything extra, just the bin and if it is overfull they stick a note on it ,,telling you the bin was to full, mullein
I work for a local council and have had many nice letters over the years.  People do, quite often, say thank you but you never hear of these satisfied customers.  I am not a hacker but really just apricot.  I cannot post under my own name for some reason.
