This song was penned by Ron Crosby after an encounter with a 'street dancer' who was in prison (USA) with him at the same time.  Later Crosby, a minor musician, changed his name to Jerry Jeff Walker and recorded it but it didn't really get anywhere, neither did a slightly later rendition by Bobby Cole.  It was the 'Nitty Gritty Dirt Band' who had a hit with this tune in the US in 1969 and then in the UK charts in 1971.
