As in we.
While the code-name Revolution expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.
Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else.
Wii will put people more in touch with their games and each other. But youre probably asking: What does the name mean?
Wii sounds like we, which emphasizes this console is for everyone.
Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.
Wii has a distinctive ii spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play.

I totally agree with Goodsoulette on this. It is a marketing ploy to hype it up and increase demand for them. They expect the reaction to be...if they are that good that they are all sold out everywhere, we must all be missing out on something good here. That way, even the people who had no interest in them will be likely to start wanting one. Unfortunately these ploys tend to work and increase sales vastly.
Yeah, yeah, I know what you're going to say...how can it increase sales if there aren't any in the shops? Easy. Watch them suddenly re-appear in controlled quantities at the 11th hour, or at least become available again immediately after Xmas. People's kids will still be nagging that they want one even after Xmas is over.
It's all marketing hype. Look what happened when Ty Warner limited the availability of those damned beany bears. Kids went crazy for them and he sold millions more than he would have otherwise on the proviso that as they were supposedly limited, they would become collectors items and increase in value. Now he's made his fortune and the market is saturated while kids sit on piles of worthless bears. Job done.

I have just done exactly that 311271!
I made sure that the price and p&p was reasonable, checked out the feedback, how many sales they had made in the past and that it was covered by PayPal Buyer Protection.
I am very wary of transactions of this value but the bloke even offers personal collection and immediate replacement if it goes awol in the post, so it should be ok.
I confess I am one of those people I mentioned that weren't interested until the hype, but my daughter desperately wants one. Living in an affluent area means all her friends either have one or are getting one for Christmas. We aren't affluent and lots of her friends already have things that she can't have, so how can I let her be the only kid without a Wii this Christmas? Well I could, but I don't want to. It's also a game that she can play indoors during the winter months and still get some physical excercise.
