Thanks very much. 18d can't be diviners as none of those letters fit. Now that I have got all the letters possible I think it must be steamers.

LottieAnne ..Can I be nosey ? I notice your post says Times 1963 .Is this from a crossword book of old Times crosswords ..similar to the one the Daily Telegraph published a while back ...80 Years of Cryptic Crosswords .

Yes, it is from a book which contains one Times crossword from each year since they first began publishing them. I do not have the book but a friend who has makes copies of one crossword every week and we take it home and compare answers the next week when he hands out the correct solution. It has become a sort of 'fun' competition between us. I am not sure of the exact title of the book but it could be the one you mention. Thanks for your help.

Thanks LottieAnne .These old crosswords are good fun .I had the DT one as a Christmas present last year and really enjoyed doing them .Amazing how the defintions to clues change over the years !.
