broadband speedchecking

can anyone explain to me in english why my pc has a speed 0f roughly 7.5 mb
and my wifi laptop has just over 2
is it because of the wifi or because of something else cos i would be very interested in the answer to this one and i know someone clever out there has the answer.where would i be without this brill site.look forward to a reply.

You hit the nail on the head when you suspected your wifi connection.

Wifi (IEEE 802.11) is a set of wireless standards which send data packets via radio frequency in the 2.4Ghz range. Depending on what protocol your access point uses (Currently 802.11a, b, g or y) the bandwidth ranges from 0.9Mbit/s to 23Mbit/s)

To enjoy your full broadband speed just use a hub or router to connect your laptop via ethernet.

I assume your PC is connected to the internet via a wire ?

If so then a wired connection is always going to be faster than a wi fi connection.

It is just the nature of the technology.

Wi fi is catching up, but is still a long way behind.

Where are you getting your speed ratings from?

While wifi is certainly slower than an ethernet (wired) connection, both are usually far faster than your actual internet connection, so the difference isn't really that apparent (except for losses in the wireless signal, which will vary depending on conditions).

yes i have a wifi router and laptop goes thru that.its nice to have a bit of knowledge about these things its just a pity that the internet providers havent got th answers and they get paid for answering these questions.makes you thin eh.tanks to all for answering my question.
