I have recently been given a roofbox, but it has no key.

The person who gave it to me said they got replacements from halfords and that I should just turn up with the box and ask them for a key with the same number on as the one on the lock .

is this right?

it is already open, but obviously I can't lock it.

can i just go with the key number or do i need to take the box with me? (not attached it yet)
do i need any sort of proof that it is my vehicle?

thanks

I don't know for sure, but I think if you could obtain a replacement key just by quoting the number on the lock then the lock becomes nothing more than a decoration. Imagine you found that someone else had done that to obtain a key for your roofbox and stolen the contents! I hope you would need to do a lot more than quote the number, or even turn up with the roofbox (same applies - you might have stolen the roofbox). I can't see how proving ownership of the car would help either.

er, yes, thats my point.

these people said they did that, but i can't believe that is right, hence my asking the question.

there must be a way to get replacement keys.

and as i say the box is empty, open and undamaged
theres 2 ways you can sort this one out
1 take it to halfords and ask them

2 if the box is already open and you can change the lock.
that would be the best way
you should only need the number on the lock to get a new set of keys ????
go to a locksmith with the lock make and key number if you get stuck mate , any decent locksmith will be able to cut you a key, if ya have no joy ill do it for you by post.
