This should help (all information taken from www.aboutabbey.com):

Welcome to the Shareholder Centre. On 12 November 2004, Abbey became part of Grupo Santander. Shares in Abbey were cancelled and shareholders became entitled to one New Banco Santander share for each ordinary Abbey share they owned. If you were an Abbey shareholder, you're now a 'CDI' holder, which means that your shares are held in CREST. This is an electronic system which records share transactions so you do not need a share certificate.
