Cant tax car

recently bought another car ( used ). The previous owner had a disabled class tax disc which isn't transferable. I tried to tax the car online but can't do that because the car isn't in my name yet and I need to change the taxation class. It states on the website that I need to take all my documents to the post office to get tax. So I did just that, only to be told that I cant tax the car at the post office because I need to change the tax class !! What do I do now,I could really do with having the car on the road over the xmas period.

To change the tax class from Disabled to Private requires a trip to a DVLA local office.
