Why are some people so jealous?

I went to a restaurant at the weekend and I have to admit I was looking fine. When I arrived, there was a group of two couples sitting at the table next to ours. The guys at the table could NOT keep their eyes off me! The girls spend the whole night giving me filthy looks! Why was this? I did nothing to encourage their men. I was simply out eating my dinner. Do women feel the need to make punish the good looking girls their partners are looking at rather than address their own issues?
