Best to check which one is recognised by the NCTJ (the professional body that most newspapers recognise). I've worked with colleagues who have trained at both and found jobs in the industry so it might be best to go with where he's happiest to be living - he might not want to be a journalist at the end of it (my boyfriend did a journ degree and is not working in the industry). I did an academic degree, worked for a few years in another industry then did an NCTJ recognised postgrad (at De Montfort), so there are always alternative routes in. And, without putting a downer on things, don't believe what you read about pay - journalists are the lowest paid profession with many starting salaries at just minimum wage and not rising much after that. If he loves journalism then he should go for it, but it might be best to study somewhere he loves living and keep his options open for all careers available when he graduates.
