My glorious new puppy
4 Answers
We have recently adopted a new 5 month old puppy from our local dog shelter. House/toilet training is an issue (I had forgotten how hard it was - so all suggestions welcome!) however for understandable reasons, the little mite is very insecure. Her preference is to sit on my lap, chest and even my head! She has a new basket that she seems comfy in but although she goes into a full on sleep, when she wakes up she is really panicked and tries to jump into my arms. I have dealt with it so far by reassuring her briefly and then promptly returning her to her bed (where she falls asleep again quite quickly). I just wanted to make sure that I was doing the right thing?

I have never put down paper and just make sure that the pup has frequent access to the garden...on waking, after eating and sometimes during play. Ignore the bad....and praise praise praise the good. If you catch them in the act....pick them up [even if still peeing] and take them outside [not easy if you have a Great Dane like me ;O}
She should soon stop using you as a human cushion, just carry on as you are.
Well done for rescuing this baby.

Hi, shivvy - what a lovely person you are to rescue that poor wee thing, especially at this time of year! I agree with the others - you seem to be doing all the right things, and I'm sure she'll soon become more confident in her new home. She's probably still missing her mum and her litter-mates so all the love and affection you're giving her are great!! Give her a big hug from me and you two have a lovely, cosy Christmas together.
