We are having a chocolate fountain which will hopefully get people talking. We were thinking of having a Scottish piper too but we're not too sure yet.
I probably can't help much, helster. When we got married we had a total of 50 people and arranged to hire a restaurant for the afternoon (no evening 'do'). The food and drink cost around 700 and we hired an entertainer for the kids ~ an hour cost 120.
It was a small restaurant so we managed to keep costs down quite well!
When we got married we got married in the local registry office (it was either that or Church in those days). We only had 30-35 people there at the day do so had a meal in a local restaurant then in the evening we hired the local cricket club and a DJ. My in-laws did the evening buffet, so it was very cheap for us! Even if it was cheap for a wedding we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and I don't think we could have had a better wedding if we'd splashed out a lot of money on a swanky hotel do. Do what makes you happy - it's your wedding day, no-one elses!
Our wedding was registry office, cake at my sisters and meal for guests in an Italian restaurant. And we are still married nearly 30 years later. The wedding is only one day so dont overspend but hope you enjoy it.
If you know anyone with a farm or bit of land, how about a massive bonfire with a hog roast and lamb roast loads of fireworks and maybe a barn dance type of thing.
