Fiction - Philip Roth's American Pastoral is a fantastic read Police thriller - The Seville Communion by Arturo Perez Reverte

Bill Bryson's "a brief history of nearly everything", is a great read. Enough knowledge in there to keep you going for a thousand pub arguments. I've also just started "the Da Vinci Code", and it seems pretty good so far - read it before they make the film at least!

I would highly recommend the Da Vinci Code its one of the best books I've read in age. If you want something to keep you interested but thats not too heavy I would recommend Easy ways to make a living or "A starter for ten" is really good. Finally why don't you read an old classic? I've just read catcher in the rye for the millionth time.

One of my favourite nonfiction books is The Making of the Atomic Bomb by Richard Rhodes. Darn good read, and bestseller wise anything by Robert Ludlum usually involves secret organisations, aging nazis and uberassassins who are rubbish at killing the main protagonists and knocks Dan Browns stuff into a cocked hat. As for a Police book, I find Graham Taylor entertaining.

For best seller, I'd like to echo jenky with Bill Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything. If you don't want something so long, go for Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time.

Kate Adie's autobiography is excellent, I didn't think it was my cup of tea but everyone I know has borrowed it and loved it.

Fiction - 'Carter beats the devil' (sorry cannot remember the author - stunning book though
J G Ballard 'complete short stories' - complete genius
non fiction - 'Garrincha' - the triumph and tragedy of Brazil's footballing hero...top notch.

Angels and Demons is definitely the better bet out of the first two Dan Brown books, for a non-fiction try The Adventure of English by Melvin Bragg, or for a classic read Catch 22 (again).
