wheel spins when out of gear

I jacked one wheel up today to do an oil change and ran the engine a bit to warm it up. but the raised wheel spins and the car is out of gear, I don't just mean it twists about a bit idely it really get packing to the point well you can stop it with your hand but need to take care. if I put my foot on the clutch it stops, but the point is its out of gear so why is it turning at all ?

You could, for a load of money and no point, have the clutch plate tensioners adjusted, but you'll probably find most cars do this. Having the plates just about in contact makes for an effective clutch operation. If there was a significant gap, there would be a 'slip' of the clutch when the car was in gear.
