The Garmin nuvi are capable of both. The name Garmin is great too, been going donkeys years.
The TomTom Go series have been advertised by making a feature of their versatility as a handheld devices, as well as for use in the car. Perhaps that's what you're thinking of? There are various models, starting from 249:

However, the mapping used by TomTom only shows streets, not footpaths.

If you're a serious walker, I'd recommend buying a cheaper make of satnav for the car (at, say, around 150), then spending the spare 100 on a Garmin handheld navigation system which, in conjunction with an OS map, will be far more useful in the countryside:

I use a pda/phone and have Co-Pilot 7 with it. It has a feature on it which you can use when walking or riding a bike.
Yes, there is.

I just bought one and tried it last weekend when we went to Yorkshire Dale National Park. Left the car park and we took away our new TOMTOM GO702 with us for walks.

As long as its battery is charged, you can take on country walks. This gadge is brilliant. I love it and will recommend to everyone.

It is quite expensive ... 279.99 for having EU countries maps as well as UK maps ... but it's absolutely brilliant. At moment I believe it's on sale at Currys 223.99.

Thanks.
Sorry ... it is TOMTOM GO720 ... not TOMTOM GO702 ... mistyping.
Neildown, do you use that on your mobile - if so any good?
Go to www.twigworld.com.They have a mobile [about the size of the Nokia 3330] but with built in navigation. It has both walking and driving modes.I bought mine in NETTO for 130.Price on the manufacturers site 599 EUR..The phone is made in Finland by the Benefon company and they claim it to be a world first No seperate aerial is required.Good luck in your search .
