Hi,

I have a cross bred mongrel dog - that is perfect in every way apart from the past few months she has been excessively shedding hair - you can pull it out in big clumps.

Is this a result of poor nutrition or heating in the home. Can anyone advise please?

Hi there, you don't say whether or not she is getting bald patches or if it is just loose hair coming out? if it's the former then you need veterinary advice, but if it's the latter it could very well be the central heating causing it, I have 4 dogs and they moult all year around but at this time of year the German Shepherds are horrendous!! anyone visiting never wear good clothes as no matter how many times the hoover goes around the house there is still enough dog hair to stuff a pillow! lol.
How old is she and how long have you had her?

Is she drinking any more than normal these last few months and has her behaviour changed in any way? Is she itchy?

I also second Illyria54's question - are there any bald bits or is it escessive shedding?

cross bread mongrel dogs get over heated blood some times its the food [ ie to rich ]mostly its the tin food that makes them itch. irritating sensation in the upper surface of the skin usually this some times makes them molt i had a welsh terrier cross that use to rub his back on low objects and make him self have bald patches becauce the tin food was to rich for him try cutting out the tin food
I have two rough collies and this year the bitch has moulted all her under coat out. This makes her lookVet says very thin now. But the dog still has his thick coats. The vet said some dogs do moult this time of year with heating but this is only the second time in 9 years. Last year was the first time and she was ill then with hepittis, blue eye, as they call it in rough collies.
jaspercarrot, overheated blood???
Has nothing to do with the dog being crossbred!! if anything cross bred dogs can be more hardy than pedigree dogs, I just think it is the central heating.

Hi,

Thanks for all the replies.

She is not going bald, just loose hair and lots of it. She has definetly got german shepherd in her. She is 4 years old and we have had her from 8 weeks old. She also doesn't drink too much water and her behaviour is perfectly normal. Thanks once again
