OK. Get some proper advice on this as the benefits system is complex. Some benefits are affected by savings and other income and some are not.
Your hubby can claim contribution based Job Seekers Allowance for the first 6 months. This is based on the national insurance contributions he has paid during his working life, and he has a right to claim this. He will need to sign on and show that he is looking for employment.
After this 6 months, if he has not found work, then the contribution based JSA will stop. Future claims will take into account the both of your situations and any dependent children. This is when your savings and your IcB and Ind Inj Bens will be taken into account.
However, they amount of saving you can have before this prevents you claiming varies depending on age.
Finally, if you have been unable to work for a period of time it might be worth exploring if you could qualify for disability living allowance. Again this is not means tested but is based on your need for help and support with day to day living (dressing, washing, getting in and out of bed/chairs).
Go to see your local citizens advice bureau and ask for a full benefits entitlement check and for more information on DLA.
Please don't listen to some of the other bigoted idiots who have posted responses. If you are entitled, claim.
Take care

why should he not be able to claim jsa when hes probably worked all his life, had 11% of his wages robbed from him every week in the form of national insurance and then been made redundant thru no fault of his own??? especially when you consider the scum who live off the state since they've left school because they're too thick or lazy to get a job or deliberately get themselves pregnant, and don't start me on all the bloody immigrants who come here to sponge off us.
i lost my job after 17 yrs and clamed jsa for 6 months. you wouldn't believe how hard they make it for you to get te money your entitled to, they interrogate and treat you like your a criminal. and i always thought that if you were made redundant they helped re-train your for other careers but they just leave you to rot. i will never claim jsa again its that bad.
