One thing to try would be to add a small amount of sea salt to the water as this seems to clear up the infection and heal any damaged cells (scales). The white fluffy bits that you are referring to will soon disperse into the water and leave a nasty pink patch where the fish's scales once were.
If you do not already have a mechanism for circulating air into the tank (a pump or similar device) it is recommende that you invest in one as this will also supply the fish with the air that they need. Regular cleansing of the tank and the addition of salt water (a small amount only) should clear this up in no time!!!
