It is obviously a 'generation thing' as I remember the cry well from my childhood visits to the seaside.
"there are not as many as there once were" could equally apply to the boatmen, and to the actual birds which are becoming scarcer.

Further to my comments above, I was perhaps exposed to the cry more than others as it was brighton Beach I used to visit. See this link:
