Most of what you'll find online just covers the period since they set up their websites. This site should take you to newspaper sites generally:

The Guardian and Observor have digitized a lot of their archive here:
http://archive.guardian.co.uk/Default/Skins/Di gitalArchive/Client.asp?Skin=DigitalArchive&en ter=true&AppName=2&AW=1198481156545
The archive currently covers the period of 1821-1975 for the Guardian and 1900-1975 for the Observer
Searching is free of charge but you do have to pay for other things like viewing full articles or printing.

The British Library in London has a HUGE collection of Newspapers (the building is well worth a visit anyway).
You can read more about the newspapers here (as well as which can be accessed via the internet)
