How can I transfer around 500MB free space from Drive D to Drive C?

The disc was partitioned at some point in the murky past [before me].....I know not why.

Any advice most welcome.

Partition magic can resize partitions but with a risk of losing some data.  Using a defrag program (Norton used to be able to do this) to move all your data to the start of the hard drive will help.  Otherwise, uninstalling programs and reinstalling on drive D would be a safer way to go.
I can recommend Partition Magic. Very simple to use.
