education maintenance allowance

Hi

I don't know if I can have Education Maintenance Allowance for my son paid into a savings account or if it can only be paid into a current account. If that's the case I don't know which bank would be willing to open one for a 16yr old, esp as I'm single parent low income.

Any advice please anyone?  Thanks

It shouldn't make any difference what type of account you have, provided you can give an account number and sort code.  If you have a building society account, you will normally also need a rfernce number to quote.

EMA payments can only be paid into the students account - this is made clear on the application form itself. It is best to open a card account for the child as book accounts have an extra reference number to quote when making payments into the account. The card can be a savings or current account, although at 16 most banks and building societies decline the request if it's a current account. There's no problem I know of with regard to having an account in the first place - just take relevant ID to your chosen place, not forgetting your son(!) and i'm sure you'll be fine.
