MOT failure due to emissions - is there anyway to fix this ?

my car has just failed mot due to this and the garage say around �300 to sort, just wondered if there was any way I could do anything myself and have a retest.
I have heard of changing the oil meaning a pass 2nd time and also RedX additive added meaning a pass, but anyone know any facts?

�300 just seems about right for fitting a new catalytic converter, did you ask them what the �300 was for?

Could need new exhaust sensors.

Changing oil and redex? do you believe in urban myths?

It is possible the catalytic as toureman says
But as i can guess your car might need a good oil and filter change and the plugs of course..
Most garages( National Tyres & Autocare) will do an oil and filter change for around �20 so id try the cheaper option first..

hi guys,
they just said it was to reduce the emissions, for all 3 things.
no mention of the cat to me
did mention the lambda reading but couldn't tell until they had a good look.
had a new exhaust fitted about 2 months ago.

its a peugeot 405 auto exec. 1997. petrol

An old trick (but not always successful) is to take the car on a nice long run prior to the test.

We managed to squeeze a few cars through in my old place of work like that!

If it is your catalytic converter then you would have to replace it, they are costly but maybe you can get one from the local car breakers or someone may be breaking a similar car near to you you could get one off.
