What damage can a vax carpet cleaner do to a carpet?

Hi Folks, I have a 3 month old light sandy coloured carpet that has gathered enough spilled drink stains over the christmas/ new year period to keep a student and his mate blind drunk for a week. I have been given a vax to clean the carpet but I have been told, more than once, that it will get my carpet clean but it will also "knock the stuffing out of it" and dramaticaly reduce the life span of the carpet. Can anyone tell me if there is any way to avoid this damage or maybe a better way to clean my multi-coloured carpet? Thanks in advance.

I dont know who told you that, but it is entirely wrong in fact, cleaning it ocassionaly can increase its life and removes the deep down grit which would wear the carpet.

It is true if you have certain types of carpets and the residue left behind can act like a magnet to dirt.

Not all carpets can be cleaned with shampoos, not all can be dry cleaned.

What sort of carpet do you have and has it any coating such as Scotchguard?

It is super top twist pile carpet and unfortunately it has no protection at all.
