Technically we are closer to the Sun in winter than we are in the summer, in terms of orbit, however the tilt of the Earth means that the Northern Hemisphere is tilted towards the sun in the summer and that is why it is hotter.
When it is our winter the Southern Hemishpere is tilted towards the sun and that is why Australia etc., have their summer then.
