childminders pay???

Hi there all.... just wondering what the going rate is?
I have 2 boys aged 13 & 11 who go to unregistered childminder for 7 hours a day, 3 times a week... What do you think is a fair rate to pay? I asked her what she wanted but she just said it was up to me and i dont want to short change her.....

It is not illegal to care for children over the age of 8 without registering. It is entirely voluntary whether or not to register for this age group.

Carers might choose to register to allow the parent to be able to pay by childcare vouchers (from your employer) or to claim the childcare element of tax credits.

If either child was under 8 then she would have to register regardless of whether money was changing hands unless care was being provided in the child's home, by a close relative or for less than 2 hours per day or less than 6 days per year

My childminder charges �4.50 an hour or �200 a week (which ever is cheapest) and the second child is 1/2 price. All food, drink, ect is included.

I personally think that there is no minimum that you could offer as she is not registered so should not be expecting a great deal.

Hi, my understanding is that it is not illegal to charge for looking after children over the age of 8 if you're not registered. It's only if you're looking after under-8s that you have to be a registrered chidlminder. I would use a registered childminder if there was one, but in our village there is only one registered childminder and she is full. It's easy for people to say to use a registered one but in rural areas there is often no provision, plus no after school clubs. That said, I wouldn't use an unregistered childminder if my children were under 8 as it would be illegal, plus no comeback if something goes wrong. My children are the most precious thing I have so I would never put them in a situation where I didn't feel that they were safe. If I didn't have a neighbour who had them after school for me then I'd have to give up my job because of lack of childcare.
I pay the person who looks after my two �3.50 per child per hour, which I think is reasonable. It does add up though!

I pay �3.20 per hour to a registered childminder in my area. I used to pay a relative �2.50 per hour but it just didn't work out. She cancelled on me when her own child was ill which was a nightmare getting to work. Your boys are the right sort of age for some of these out of school clubs ... are there any in your area? I'm assuming you only need the care during holiday time? Lots of fun ... might be a treat for them ...
