I'm off to Oslo at the end of this month, and found out that a pint of beer generally costs 10ish! Has anyone been to Oslo before? And do they know of any chep places to go?

You don't go to Oslo, or Norway, for cheap beer. It doesn't exist. We were there in the Summer and a Coke was circa 4, same as a small beer. Lovely place though, great people and soooooo clean. Thermals required.

eeek!! Ok the myth is true! Duty free on the way out it is then!
Friends are Norwegian, they even go to Sweden for cheaper alcohol. about a fiver for a beer. Take some spirits with you
........ and the Swedes go to Denmark to stock up on beer and spirits.
In terms of relative price, I think the sequence is (highest first) - Norway, Sweden, Denmark, rest of the world a distant fourth.

ok...ok........i seem to have the picture! does anyone know if Norweigians at this time of year have Glu-wein huts along the streets? And if they sell this at a reasonable 'british' prices? i'm not a beer monster.....its just i dont want to find myself blowing all my spends on a night out! thanks everyone!
My friend in Norway says it's about 5.50 - 6 for a pint in their city though it may be a little more in Oslo. I've been to Copenhagen, Denmark, and it was nearly 4.80 there. A Norwegian bloke I chatted to in one of the pubs confirmed that Norway was more expensive, closely followed by Sweden.

Yum, looking forward to seeing Glhwein back on the streets in Mnchen. Perfect drink for winter :)
You can drink the local moonshine , thats cheap but deadly,in more ways than one.
I heard that in scandanavia they have a lot of party boats that go out to sea where you are entitled to drink tax free booze. Don't know much more than that though.
You could always try enjoying yourself without alcohol and actually remember what it was like :-)

.....don't get me wrong, I enjoy a drink especially with a meal. So I just wanted to see if there was any places that were moderately cheap in Norweigian terms. Your right that I could not drink and remember my visit....but then sticking to Pepsi will also cost a lot too (apparantley)......overall it's just expensive, and I head there tonight.....so many thanks for all the responses :)
Tell me how Oslo was! I'm heading there in the middle of March - did you find anywhere cheap to drink? And is there anything you would advise me not to miss? Also - I don't suppose you stayed in a cheapish hotel and want to recommend it?!

Hi there.....yeah Oslo is a great place! Very friendly and very clean/tidy!

We stayed at Hotel Bristol for 5 nights - which is a fabulous hotel which has a fantastic buffet breakfast (almost all food selections). We stocked up on a big breakfast as to prevent forking out for lunch, and then dined in different restaurants each night.............many to choose from!

Now the Hotel Bristol is not cheap, and we got our booking via hotelsclick.com - again great service there too! It cost approx. 90 for a double (2 of us).

The good thing about staying there was that about 100metres directly from Hotel Bristol there are several Sports Bar's that have cheapish beer.........on a Norway scale.......with prices at about 4 / 5 per pint! Also on a street behind Hotel Bristol (I cant remember names etc) there was a pokey little pub that played live music and again had cheapish beer........we stumbled upon this when we walked back from an Indian restaurant (nice food).....again I cant remember where that is, but it isnt far from the Hotel.

There's quite a bit of sightseeing in Oslo, but this can be covered in a few days. The Ski jump 'Holmenkollen' via a short train ride was good, we actually went further up the track to Frognerparken and walked down to the ski jump.....great scenary and views.

The Viking village and boat museum is also worth checking out............another walk from Oslo centre around the waterfront to the (sort of) Island in the middle of the fjord.

Within the centre you have the art galleries (Munch) and historic buildings too.....and quite alot of shops if you fancy it.......although prices are far steeper!

Hope this helps, and I hope you have a great trip out there!
Safe journey!

Thank you for the detailed feedback, very clear and useful
