Illegal Travellers {gypsies}
18 Answers
locally we have hordes of travellers, why they're called travellers is another story as they stay put in various sites. Just learned today that the
council are considering giving them permanent
sites in residential areas. As expected residents
very upset. At the moment they have all facilities supplied by the council which ratepayers have to fund.
I know this is their choice of life but surely
something can be done to appease the problem

We are very thankful to have them - they, more than the police and council, stop other travellers illegally setting up home on any bit of spare land that they can, as they do in the neighbouring councils.
I'm not saying they are angels but they are no worse than the other locals. We have a very low incidence of burglary and car theft and the pubs are trouble free and they keep their sites beautifully clean.

I am sorry to say I have had quite different experiences with travellers than Ethel has.
When they arrived in my village burglarly went through the roof, washing from lines was stolen, dog theft occurred, sheep rustling. The list was endless.
They were here for about 4 days until the police and local authority served them a 24 hour notice.
Your original gypsy or Romany are fine. They are well bred actually, although possibly lacking some nicities found in polite society, but on the whole fully acceptable.
However your todays traveller is little more than a filthy theiving pikey. Most are on heroin and in breeding is so rife you often find the children are mutants.
Sorry my own observations.

Our experience is much the same as Wardy's & to add to that - the local shopkeepers have nothing but hassle from them including shoplifting.
Also, when I go swimming with my daughters &/or granddaughters, you can guarantee that if the 'travellers' have been in there, you'll find dirty nappies in the changing rooms &/or chucked by the bins & not in them! They are really disgusting people, with no morals.
P.S. I'm not talking original Gypsies or Romanies.

word of warning:
we have a permanent site in our town. When it was opened the residents of the town were told that it would be better to have it as the authorities would move on anyone who was illegally parked elsewhere in the town, especially if there were spaces on the permanent site.
This has never been the case. Illegal sites are closed down, usually within a month if they are on council owned land, anyone else has to lump it.
Also the site over the summer was empty and we had an illegal camp on our industrial estate. We pointed out to the council that the travellers should be on th permanent site. But again theres a loop hole. travellers using the permanent site pay a tiny rent, when they get on many families pay for the whole year up front and then when they go off on their travels no-one else can use their space there.
Make sure that everything is clarified properly by the relevent parties.

oh yes, the police are also pretty much scared of them They will never go onto the permanant site because they are not to harrass the travellers. The illegal site had lookouts on the entrance and would follow anyone in. We even witnessed a kid of about 12 driving a transit van and the police refused to come out, it was even under the CCTV cameras.
we had a toddler of about 2 squat and poo in the middle of our carpark. My dad went out and spoke to the childs father who apologised and promised to clear it up. My mum had to do it as they didnt bother.
The same child was also found wandering along the main road a day later, the parents were oblivious to her disappearance. Bet if they losther theyd be straight on phone asking police for assistance (not that i would disagree with it if a child was missing)

we have a block of flat near here with a car park. One day we surprised to see that travellers had moved into the car park.
There was a big uproar and as we had to walk past them, the smell and accumulating rubbish was terrible.
We also have one permanent site not so far away and they have really done up the caravans to look like houses.
I guess some are ok and some are not.

Can I please just point out that these peple are not Gypsies, my grandparents were gypsies and they were spotlessly clean and very hard working people, they travelled and did farm work and laso bought and sold fruit and veg, repaired furniture etc, never conned anybody and were very gentle loving people. there "carvo "Caravan was spotlessly clean and they never stole anything in there entire lives.
Hello red, no need to apologise and you are 100% correct in that these so called travellers are mostly lazy gits out for whatever they can get from the system. I have no time for them and something should be done about it, i reaklly feel sorry for anyone that lives near these wasters, but they certainly aren't gypsies. take care red xx
