morbid obesity

Did any one watch that programme half tonne mum? It was on a while ago, and although its dreadful that she died at the end, i couldnt help getting angry with her. She had these two poor girls who had to put up with her in that state, and now have to cope without her.
Now im not saying that its by any means easy to lose weight, but its possible, especially when your that big, just two less cheeseburgers a day would help.
But what angered me most was, this woman was bedbound, so obviously someone was bringing her the food, so why didnt they just starve her, or give her a salad once a day, she'd have survived, and lost enough weight to be able to get up and exercise. Her poor daughters didnt deserve to lose her to something so curable.

It's not like she could have beat them or anything for not bringing her junk food, if they bought her salad she would have had two choises - eat it or go hungry.
I can't even imagine how much food someone must eat in order to get to that size in the first place and as for how she got pregnant - YUK! I don;t even want to think about that!!

I watched it too & I really felt for the young daughters she left behind.
How anyone can get that big baffles me, but then I've never been a big eater.
Apart from her wanting to eat, eat, eat, surely her parents or the people who supplied her with so much food whilst she lay in bed & getting no excercise, must share some of the responsibilty too....

Western society has a seriously purient attitudde to obesity. Unlike any other illness - and in extreme cases like this, that's what it is - many people take the moral high ground and assume that people like this poor woman are simply too idle and / or weak-willed and selfish to diet, even when their weight costs them their life.
The situation is far more complex than that.
You are dealing with someone with severe pshychological problems that minifest themselves in gross over-eating, which is deaf to the comon sense of health and family.
Similarly, (I didn;t see the programme) anyone involved in contributing to this situation has similar issues - mainly of insecurity and the need to have control over another individual - in its own way another raft of psychological issues, which bound together, make the lethal combination that occured here.
Obesity - in simple terms - is curable, the causes of life-taking obesity are not simple, and not easily cured.
Tragic, but more complex than we initially like to believe.

What I didn't get was at the beginning of the program she stated that she didn't eat that much!?! Don't know if anyone else spotted that bit.
I watched Jamie Olivers: Eat to save you life, which showed an autopsy of a 25 stone man. All of his vital organs were seriously affected by the volume of fat in his body . This woman weighed over double that. I dread to think what her insides were like.

As Andy says, like any addiction, the reasons for gross overeating are very complex and invariably traumatic.
This poor woman was to be pitied and helped, not despised for her own shortcomings. She paid the ultimate price and her daughters will carry the trauma of what happened to their mother with them. I can only hope that their own distress doesn't manifest itself in the same way, but you really can't be blaming the lady in quesiton, she really needed help, she wasn't just a big fat pig who liked eating, there were reasons, there always are.
Nox.

your right tiggerblue, she did say she didnt eat much, which evidently is not true, and we were told by the daughter that she ate lot. I dont know, of course i pity her and her daughters even more so, but theres no denying that the people who took her the food weren't helping her. If theyd have left her to starvation even(harsh i know) but those girls would probably still have a mother.
I watched it too, it was very sad that she died after taking the steps to start losing weight.
Her daughters were contradicting what she was saying though, she said that she's not fat because she overeats, she has to force herself to eat something most days, yet the daughters were telling us a different story.
I wondered the same thing about her getting pregnant too, Jillius!

I watched it too and was shocked that those who were supplying her with food were effectively feeding her to death. It reminded me of that horrible film clip of geese having food endlessly forced down their throats to produce foie gras. It illustrates how difficult it is for those who are morbidly obese to lose weight without a great deal of support and understanding from those around them. If you are not helping them in a educated fashion you're effectively in colluding in sending them to an early death.
