Where did take a rain check originate?

I believe - and i am open to correction as always, that it started with baseball games in usually rainfree cities. If the game was rained off, the audience each got a 'raincheck' which gave them free admission to the replay. In modern parlance it has come to mean putting off something, usually a meeting or a date, until another time.
