I have 5 Tattoos on my body, all of which are black (one has a red bit). I was wondering in the shower this morning, can black people have tattoo's. I mean would a lighter colour change dark skin, or can colour be applied to dark skin?

I know this question may appear to some to be racist, however i am not a racist person. I love all people regardless of race / colour / creeed. I am however curious on this.

Well, any colour you can have on a tatoo works on every colour skin. A black tatoo will show on a "black" person's skin as their skin is brown rather than black. Some, I guess, will show better against a darker or paler colour, but it's pretty much the same I would guess!
Yes, black (actually brown) skin can take tattoos. My friend is a tattooist and often tattoos black skin which shows up ok.
Ive seen loads of tattoos on people with darker skin -have to say they tend to stick to a black tattoo -dont often see coloured ones -in fact cant remember seeing any -lol
Hi dinsdale, far as I know, tattoos show up fine on black skin. You can get white tattoo ink-my friend had her first done in white, and I am sure it would provide a good contrast on dark skin.
o that would be smart -a white one -wonder if anyone with expertise can google one and post a pic -shamefaced cos i cant.

Go on theres a challenge -i am seriously not being lazy \BTW
Maoris have darker skin and have tattoos, but very black skin is very difficult to tattoo in the way the Europeans tattoo - they scar themselves in a way that leaves raised designs on the skin.

Tattoos are ancient and are found in all races and cultures

Loads of good stuff there, thanks everyone for that! I wont rate your answers individually but they are all 3 star
an ex of mine is black and he has black tattoos - it looked amazing!
Did anyone look at the link to the Ethel posted the guy had done a genital disection (himself). put genital disection in the search box on the website and prepare to be absolutely horrifed.
ARE you Racist?? What a stupid question! - are you saying black people cannot have tattoo's cause you can't see them!
HOW VERY DARE YOU....
I'm curious to see what you would look like with AFRO hair! - as it clearly is an issue!
I dated a black guy who had a tribal design from his wrist all the way up his arm going on to his neck, shoulder and back. It was very, very, sexy.

If you have very dark skin then the lighter, pastel type colours wont show up because the ink is translucent. So the darker the skin the less vibrant it will be. Rich colours should show up fine though.

The problem being with tattooing darker skin is that those with African origins can be more prone to keloid scarring. I have some keloids myself (but am white) but I can be tattooed and pierced without this scarring issue. My tattooist is a friend and he gave me some tattoo spots under my foot to check this wouldnt happen.
