Gym Music, aaaaarrrrrrggggghhhhh....
8 Answers
Just got back from the Gym, now I have my ipod with lots of great stuff on it, mostly from the 80's anyway so I don't have to listen to the music in the Gym except when it's so loud I can't help it!
As I was doing some cardio I started to wonder a couple of things
a) why do they have the worst music channel on, ie some dance sh1te like MTV Dance. They only have about 4 tracks that they play continuously all day in between the adverts!
b) How many people actualy prefer that channel given the choice? Are they sort of pretending to like it because it's the youtfull thing to do when they are secretly craving VH1?
c) Do you think it's the preference of the Gym staff or do they think it's what we like?
d) why is it when I ask for it to be changed, they duly oblige, for about 10 smegging minutes!
e) What would you have on given the choice? VH1 for me, what channel do they have in your Gym?
aaaaaaarrrrrrgggggghhhhhh - rant over!

I go to, well, I pay for, Fitness First and they have their own music channel. It played the same ten songs for five months! I understand your rant, Loosehead.
The telly that played BBC1 was always "broken" when Eastenders was on, too. Pah!

Just another reason amongst many, why I am so anti-gym!!!
But to answer your question, gyms are paid for by membership NOT individual attendance.
The quicker you leave the actual gymnasium and spend a few pounds in the cafeteria, its more money for them!!!
And if I did ever find myself attending a gym I would prefer to listen to the wireless, probably Radio 2.

Well 4getmenot, I recently got the Ipod because of the above. I would dearly love to not have to use it. I was relating my experiences that led up to me getting one really. I mean now I have one I'm not that bothered but it's still an area of curiosity for me. I like the Gym generally it's just a few details that wind me up. If they have a proper music channel on I would leave my own music at home.
I agree, Loosehead - when I was rich enough to use a Gym, the inane music drove me scatty, and my MP3 player couldn't compete with the volume level. I have since discovered Sennheiser "noisegard" headphones and they have transformed my listening. I have even been known to put them on withut any input, just to have a bit of peace and quiet for reading (particularly up the pub!)

I think my gym must have listened to complaints like yours because they have the radio on in the background, which isn't too loud, and they have TV's suspended from the ceilings.
Each TV had a different channel....BBC1....ITV...C4....C5....MTV.....VH1.....Sky News. If you want to watch a particular TV you just plug your headphones into the machine you're on and let the machine know which one you want to watch.
There are a couple of machines that don't have this facility, and the weights etc obviously, so all of the TV's have the subtitles switched on.

Most gyms will play fairly high tempo music channels. Dance music in particular usually has a fast repetitive beat which believe it or not is actually condusive to the rhythm with which you work out. Its actually quite funny to watch people on a treadmill when music like that is playing because without realising it they will actually time their steps to the beat of the music!!
