Roasting Marshmallows

I'm an American and was wondering, Is roasting marshmallows an American thing, or do they do it in other places? I recently had a guest over from Japan and she had never heard of such a thing, but really liked it.
Anyone?

Roasted or we called it toasted marshmallows are almost compulsory round any Scout campfire.
Don't do them at home though.

Yes they toast/roast their marshmallows (squishy white sugar based treats found in supermarkets) in the fireplace. I stand corrected

try tosting marhmallows on a long keebab over the coals after your barbeque, then they are called "flumps"

What's this about not doing it at home?!! I do them over the ring on the gas cooker - cook much faster than on an open fire, so beware!, but taste fantastic!

Doh, just realised what you meant by 'don't do it at home'! Thought it was a warning! And yes, us Brits do them at Scout and Guide camp (and some of us at home!). My grandma was American - so maybe toasted/roasted marshmallows are in my blood!

Funny MsHallFl forgot to mention, along with the toasted over-the-camp-fire marshmallows, the standard of any Scout, Brownie or Girls Scout campfire... the 'Smores!

Grab a Graham Cracker, a Hershey's plain Chocolate Bar... toast the marshmallow, put the Hershey bar on the Graham Cracker and cover it with the hot marshamllow... ummmm...!
