adobe cs3 suite - educational discount
5 Answers
Hi, have you bought any adobe products with the educational discount? I have a 12 year old who is using dreamweaver at school and it seems very good value to buy this software (or more likely the whole suite as you pay 25% of the price) at the discounted price. Do you get the full software and are there any drawbacks buying his way? Look forward to any replies.

According to the Adobe web site:
Dreamweaver CS3 is 393.
The CS3 Web Premium is 1,404
The CS3 Master suite is 2,313
If we take Dreamweaver as an example, much of the high cost is due to the fact it can work with "back end" server systems, which I doubt your 12 year old is doing yet.
And if you dont use Dreamweaver to do back end server work then you are left with a very expensive HTML / CSS design tool.
While I agree it is good to use the tools at home that they use at school, I am sure you could find a cheaper (or even free) HTML / CSS tool on the web somewhere for him to use at home.

I have looked at the education web page on the Adobe site and if he can get "student" rate the prices drop dramatically, Dreamweaver is 81 for example.
As far as I know you get the full product.

You can get a package like this for 160...
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Adobe-CS3-Web-Standard -Student/dp/B000OZ2EOQ/ref=sr_1_18?ie=UTF8&s=s oftware&qid=1201278398&sr=1-18
But I'm not sure your son will meet the educational requirements (it may be for uni use only -- but check).
It is the complete software though. You get the usual package, then have to email them with proof of your student status. Then you wait a few days for them to email you a serial number.
(I've used a similar offer to get CS3 design standard with photoshop, illustrator, etc.)
Finally, I'd question your purchasing of this in the first place. I assume he's doing some web design or something? Many designers (or rather, developers) don't use anything like this at all, and just write in raw HTML and CSS. This involves only free software that you can download yourself.
Plus, while he may be using the software now, he may change his mind (likely if he gets into it), and use other software.
