1 cement to 5 sand (soft ) to 1 or 2 lime

it really depends on the exposure of the wall. If you live near the sea, it would be better to go 4:1. If the wall is in contact with soil, then you need to take sulphate resistance into consideration.
if none of the above are likely to be a problem, them 5:1 is fine.... or as it's sometime refered to "1 in plenty"
