I think celibacy should be a choice made rather than an enforcement or an old doctrine.

That said... I don't think there should be priests full stop so maybe I shouldn't be answering.

hi dot i thought you had deserted me when you read of my age however all joking aside here in dundee we have a priest who has been having an affair with a woman for 18 years she gave him the heave for a younger version its a true saying hell has no fury like a woman scorned

Is having sex with nuns and boys being celibate? No. They might as well change their rules and experience 'the fruit' because the majority of them secretly do it anyway.

No, as much as I think there should be female catholic priests. On the same par as Chinadoll, I think anyone should be allowed to be a leader of the religion of their choice. I have no problem with religion, as I see it as a philosophy rather than a dictatorship of one's "thoughts". If you live your life according to your beliefs, and it doesn't hurt anyone, fine by me! And if you wish to climb the religous ladder, as it were, then fine by me too, as long as you don't interfere/preach when not asked.

O we have had a priest in Scotland who has been having an affair with a married woman for 25yrs.She divorced her man and the priest finished the relationship

He is now suspended -and the funny thing is that he has been named now and he was the priest in my town -for years -now in Dundee and the Bishop was also a priest in my home town as well (rather handsome it has to be said) -bit of The Thornbirds here -ooo errr -lol.
I dont agree they should publicy remain celibate cos I would bet my bottom dollar that 90% of them have had a sip.............................the other 10% being gay.

I dont ,mean to offend any staunch people out there but its bloody human naiure and if their mums and dads had been celibate then they wouldt be her -I just dont get it at all- double standards..

I am not a catholic, and I do not want to offend any catholics by my opinion, so apologies in advance.
I think the whole idea of priests having to be celibate is ridiculous. It is unnatural and places an unnecessary burden on the priest. I think it would be better if priests were allowed to marry and be more normal. It is no wonder so many of them take to drink, or am I just stereotyping here? I have always felt that the enforced celibacy has a lot to do with the high incidence of child abuse. I don't think perverts become catholic priests, I rather think its more a case of the celibacy causing them to become perverted. It is an unnatural state, and thus causes an unnatural reaction in some cases. I am not saying that all priests are child molesters, but history shows that there has been a high incidence of this in the catholic church. There has to be some connection.

I agree Pesrian -and credit to you for being so forthright -I happen to agree as you will see -we posted at virtually the same time -it is absolutely unnatural to enforce celibacy on someone.Unless anyone is deluded (dont mean on here) they must recognise that priests will harbour sexual felling and manifest them in whatever way they choose -unfortunately and sickeningly it would appear -its documented -that children have had their lives ruined by the abuse handed out to them..

However id someone has mad their own mind up for whatever reason then thats their choice.

Personally I thing these bloody Catholics should move with the times.

If you ask most people what is the difference between Catholicism and Protestantism or Anglicanism, the average Joe will only mention the things associated with sex in some degree.

1) No sex before marriage
2) No abortion
3) No gaylords
4) No sex for their priests
5) Every Sperm is sacred, therefore limited hand shandies
6) No anal

Yes things are probably prohibited in some Anglican sects but on the whole non-Catholic Christians are more tolerant and have moved with the times.

There needs to be a complete reshuffle of ideology, if not for the good of Catholicism, but to save the world from evil muslims, who at the last count are about 600 years behind even Catholics.
