please help!

Recently got a rescued male dog whos aprox 2 yrs old,and we've already got a female whos 2.She's fully house trained but we're findin it very difficult to house train Jack.Been tryin for over a week now.Has anyone got any good tips/ideas on house training him.He has previously had a bad life so cant shout at him to much coz he gets very scared.I would appreciate any help xx

It's still early days for Jack.  You may find that as he settles down with you he will automatically become house trained.  A lot of his accidents might be because he is still  feeling  unsettled and stressed.  When he wees in the house, say no firmly and take him straight outside.  It's good if you can catch him just before he starts to wee.  Take him outside as often as you can during the day and praise him when he performs.  I promise he will get there eventually!    You are right not to shout at him.

As usual, Fakeplastic has given you a great answer. Stick to training him with only praise, & this will repair all the knocks his confidence has taken in his previous life.

With dogs who are not housetrained, I tend to treat as I would a young puppy. Take Jack outside every hour if possible...always right after eating & on waking. You don't have to stay with him...but watch if he performs & if he does make a big fuss of him & have a really fun game. He'll then be keen to impress you & it won't take long at all.

If you don't actually catch him in the act of tiddling indoors, I wouldn't draw attention to it..just clear it up quickly & give him no eye contact & ignore him for a short time. I've found that in dogs with a lack of confidence, this is enough of a punishment & it seems to guide them without crushing their spirit even more.

Purple Pixie, you are so right about the eye-contact and ignoring.  Dogs hate to be ignored!  I like the idea of having a game with him each time he performs outside,  I still get the occasional accident indoors with my little rescue dog and he was really cruelly treated.  I know when he has wee'd indoors because he comes to see me with his tail between his legs and won't look me in the eye!

Good for you rescuing him. He may just be nervous so the wazzing will pass. Have you tried putting newspaper down and praising him when he wees on it then gradually move the paper toward the door and then outside. He will soon get the hang of wazzing outside. Good luck.

Ah Fakeplastic...love those little screwed up dogs!

My little bundle of canine joy is so petrified of bangs & loud noises that going to the garden for a wee is her worst nightmare at the moment. She won't wee indoors which I guess is good, but after many hours I'm afraid she will explode!

We have got into a good routine at last...I give her a yummy chewy to have & take her to the door...I take the chewy & ask her to go & do a deposit while I keep the chewy safe, She then trots outside & providing no fireworks go off at that moment she'll do the biz & come running in with a big smile on her face & I ceremoniously give her back the chewy & we have a mad game for a while. Seems to work...can't wait for the fireworks to end.

..... and dogs really do smile don't they PurplePixie!  I really do love them all.  All my dogs and cats have such different personalities.  Rescue dogs make very special pets though.

Thankyou all for your help I really do appreciate it =o) We have been puttin him outside now soon as he wee's and then after a few min's we let him back in(hopefully should work) He's such a sweet dog too so wouldnt want to part with him because of the wee'ing because he doesnt seem to do the other one in the house at all which I found strange Thanx again xx
